Cultivating Grit and Tenacity: A Biblically-Based Practical Guide for Christian Corporate Leaders in the Age of Cancel Culture

Have I not commanded you?

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go”

Joshua 1:9

Hi Meaningful Leaders,

This past Sabbath, our pastor’s message was on fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥! He spoke about the fact that perseverance pays off. He explained that the two characteristics that make a person successful are: Grit & Tenacity. As a Christian leader, it truly made me ponder, because in an era where the corporate world is rapidly evolving and forcing us to face the complexities of ‘cancel culture’, we, Christian corporate leaders are in a unique position. We are called to navigate these turbulent waters with a combination of grit and tenacity, rooted in biblical wisdom. The beauty of this approach is that it’s not only spiritually grounded in the values of our faith, but also aligns perfectly with contemporary leadership practices – exactly as God intended 🤩

Understanding Cancel Culture: Before delving into how to foster these virtues, it’s essential to understand what cancel culture entails. In today’s digital age, cancel culture refers to the practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures, companies, or products after they have done or said something considered “objectionable or offensive”. This culture poses a significant challenge for leaders, demanding a careful balance between upholding values and managing public perception. Christian leaders are called to speak up, not just for the sake of their organizations, but to uphold truth and grace in a world quick to judge and condemn.

Grit /ɡrit/: courage and resolve; strength of character.

Tenacity /təˈnæsɪɾi/ the quality displayed by someone who just won’t quit — who keeps trying until they reach their goal.

Biblical Foundations: We need to stop looking at our Bibles as a mere spiritual guide we tap into when in need. The Living Word of God is the perfect how-to manual, filled with profound leadership and business wisdom, especially relevant in cultivating grit and tenacity for such a time as this. These virtues are exemplified throughout scripture, providing a solid foundation for Christian leaders in today’s challenging corporate environment.

  1. James 1:12 – Perseverance Under Trial: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the LORD has promised to those who love Him.” This verse eloquently encapsulates the essence of enduring through difficulties. This principle is critical in a corporate context where challenges and obstacles are frequent. It encourages leaders to view trials not as deterrents but as stepping stones to greater achievements and spiritual growth.
  2. Romans 5:3-4 – Character Development Through Suffering: “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” For a corporate leader, this passage is a reminder that the path to success and integrity often passes through the crucible of hardship. It highlights that resilience, a key component of grit, is honed through facing and overcoming adversities and strengthening our character.
  3. Philippians 4:13 – Strength in Christ: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This powerful declaration by Paul is a source of immense encouragement for christian leaders. It underscores the concept that our strength to persevere and succeed comes from our faith in Christ, reminding leaders that our source of power is not in our capabilities alone but in our absolute reliance on God’s infinite strength and wisdom.
  4. Proverbs 24:10 – Resilience in Adversity: “If you falter in a time of trouble, how small is your strength!” This verse is a call to christian leaders to build and demonstrate resilience, especially when faced with challenging or unexpected circumstances. This resilience is not just a personal attribute but a testament to their faith and trust in God’s wisdom and timing.
  5. Hebrews 12:1-2 – Running the Race with Perseverance: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Here we are encouraged to “run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus. It is particularly relevant for leaders who must navigate the complexities of today’s corporate politics. It reminds us to stay focused on God’s purpose for us, undeterred by sin, distractions or setbacks, emulating the endurance and focused faith Jesus teaches us.
  6. 2 Timothy 2:3-4 – Enduring Hardship as a Good Soldier: “Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer.” Paul’s advice to Timothy is to endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. For christian leaders, this is an analogy to remain steadfast and disciplined, understanding that leadership often involves navigating tough situations with courage and integrity, akin to a soldier in battle.
  7. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 – Self-Discipline and Focus: “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” In this passage, Paul talks about exercising self-discipline and self-denial to promote growth and success. For us leaders, this means maintaining focus and discipline in our pursuit of achieving corporate objectives; while honoring God with our labor, as an athlete striving for victory.

I’m writing this to you because I know for a fact that incorporating these biblical principles into our leadership enables us to not only handle the day to day, but to thrive amidst the challenges of the current business world with resilience and integrity, compromising is not an option. And as if this wasn’t enough, it also serves as inspiration for our teams, giving them a sense of purpose and steadfastness. These verses offer timeless wisdom that remains relevant and powerful in guiding leaders through the complexities and pressures of today’s corporate environment.

Putting It To Practice:

  1. Embrace and Communicate Vision with Core Values: Your corporate vision should be deeply rooted in biblical values like integrity and stewardship. This clarity will inspire us to stay the course.
  2. Cultivate a High-Performance Culture: Encourage a mindset where challenges are seen as opportunities to learn. This aligns with the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30), promoting continuous improvement and leveraging risk in business for profitability.
  3. Lead by Example: As Jesus demonstrated throughout His ministry, true leaders lead by example with unwavering commitment and a high sense of responsibility “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” John 13:15-17
  4. Encourage Open Communication: In the face of cancel culture, maintain an environment where employees feel safe to express ideas and concerns, reflecting Proverbs 15:22’s emphasis on the value of diverse counsel. “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed“.
  5. Acknowledge and Celebrate Resilience: Recognize efforts and perseverance in line with Galatians 6:9. This reinforces the importance of steadfastness. “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up”
  6. Practice Courageous Leadership: Staying firm in our values and faith can feel intimidating, trust me I know…people will start to treat you differently, and that’s okay. In the words of Saint Augustine “Right is right even if no one is doing it; wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it.” Be reminded that the christian walk is not supposed to be an easy one. When Jesus invites us to follow Him (and practice His principles at work and at home) He never says that it’ll be easy, but He does say it will be worth it “Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24

Let’s Wrap It Up! For Christian corporate leaders, the integration of grit and tenacity as characteristics for success, grounded in biblical teachings, is more than a strategy—it’s a calling. In the face of challenges like cancel culture, these virtues become crucial tools, enabling leaders to navigate with wisdom, uphold truth, and exhibit grace under pressure. By embracing these principles, Christian leaders can effectively lead their organizations while staying firm to our faith and values.

And before we close, I want to share with you a message we recently received from our Pastor that I think all Christian corporate leaders need to be reminded of: “I urge you in His name to stay humble, stay dependent, remain committed to be a faithful steward of all He has entrusted to you and when He returns may we hear those eternal words – “Well done my good and faithful servant“” – Pr. Kendall Turcios
