Hi Meaningful Leaders,
In the book of Judges, chapter 6, verse 25, we read about Gideon, who was called by God to deliver Israel from the Midianites. But before Gideon could lead his people to victory, he had to start the transformation with his own family. God told him to tear down his father’s altar to Baal and build an altar to the Lord in its place. This story teaches us an important lesson: to do great work outwardly, we must first start by aligning inwardly.
True leadership begins with self-leadership. Before we can guide others, we must first address our own internal challenges and ensure our hearts and minds are aligned with God’s will and away from the idols we’ve picked up along the way. Only then can we effectively lead and inspire others. As we work on our inner growth, we become more equipped to guide others on their journeys.
“Only when we have conquered our own battles might we be considered qualified to go into the world, to guide, and to lead others into conquering their own.”
Maria Aguirre – The Square-Peg Leader Delusion
For Christian corporate leaders, this principle is crucial. We must use our leadership platforms to fulfill the Great Commission, sharing the love and message of Jesus Christ. But to do this effectively, we need to ensure our own hearts and minds are aligned with God’s will. True self-leadership isn’t about misguided “self-help” but about stretching ourselves outside of our comfort zones, placing the well-being and success of our teams and customers ahead of our own.
Here are some practical tips I’ve personally apply to develop my leadership from the inside out:
- Seek God’s Guidance: Spend time in prayer and reading the Bible. Let God’s Word shape your thoughts and actions. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding. Regularly engaging with Scripture helps us discern God’s direction for our leadership.
- Cultivate Humility: Jesus is the ultimate example of a servant leader. He washed His disciples’ feet and taught that the greatest among us should be the servant of all (Matthew 23:11). Strive to serve others with humility and love. This means prioritizing the needs of your team and customers, even when it’s challenging or inconvenient.
- Practice Integrity: Be honest and ethical in all your dealings. Proverbs 11:3 says, “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.” Consistently doing the right thing, even when no one is watching, builds trust and sets a powerful example for others.
- Build Strong Relationships: Invest in your team, show genuine care and concern for their well-being. Encourage and support them in their personal and professional growth. Strong relationships are the foundation of a healthy and effective team.
- Stretch Beyond Comfort: True growth often occurs outside of our comfort zones. Challenge yourself to take on new responsibilities, learn new skills, and embrace difficult conversations. By doing so, you not only grow as a leader but also inspire your team to do the same.
When we examine the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, the word “leader” appears only six times, while “servant,” “service,” or “serve” appears over 900 times. This significant difference underscores the biblical emphasis on serving others. We are called to serve not for our own glory, but for the glory of God. We do it all for the ultimate “well done” from our Heavenly Father and we must never forget it.
Let’s Wrap It Up!
Before we can lead others effectively, we must first lead ourselves well. This means focusing on our inner growth, aligning our lives with God’s principles, and continually stretching ourselves beyond our comfort zones to serve others. By placing the well-being and success of our teams and customers ahead of our own, we embody the true essence of servant leadership. Remember, true leadership starts from within.
