Let’s talk about ego…
Ego is that little voice in our heads saying, “I’m great!” or “I need to prove I’m the best!”
Sometimes, this voice gets too loud, and we start “Edging God Out” – focusing more on ourselves than on what God wants for us and those around us.
As leaders, confidence is key. But when ego takes over, problems arise.
Think about it: an inflated ego makes us think we’re always right, shutting out feedback and new ideas. This stifles our team’s growth and success. A big ego also makes it tough to build strong, trusting relationships. If we’re always trying to prove we’re the best, we won’t value others’ contributions, and that can create a toxic work environment.
Plus, ego-driven leaders often make decisions that benefit them short-term, ignoring what’s best for the team or organization long-term. And let’s not forget the stress and burnout that come from trying to maintain an image of perfection and control. It’s exhausting!
Relying solely on ourselves can lead us away from God’s plan and His way. When we lean too much on our own understanding, we might start to feel like we don’t need God or other people, and that can leave us feeling isolated and alone. Self-sufficiency breeds overconfidence, leading to pride. Pride can blind us to our weaknesses and stop us from seeking help when we need it.
No matter how talented or experienced we are, our perspective is always limited. When we rely only on ourselves, we miss out on the wisdom and insights that others can offer, and more importantly, God’s perfect guidance. Trying to do everything on our own can be incredibly stressful. God invites us to cast our burdens on Him and find rest in His care.
Ego and pride are like two peas in a pod. Ego is our perception of ourselves, and when it gets inflated, it turns into pride. Pride is essentially thinking we’re better than we actually are, often leading us to place ourselves above others and even above God’s will. When our ego grows unchecked, it manifests as pride in our actions and attitudes.
We start to believe that we are self-sufficient and don’t need guidance or support from others or from God. This can lead to a downfall because pride blinds us to our own limitations and the value of others.
The Bible has a lot to say about the dangers of pride and the importance of humility. Proverbs 16:18 warns, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” James 4:6 reminds us, “But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.'” Proverbs 11:2 highlights, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” And 1 Peter 5:5 calls us to be humble in our interactions with others: “Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.'”

Ego makes us believe that we achieve things through our own efforts. 💥
However, it’s God who appoints us, showers us with grace, and gives us favor to do His work.
Philippians 2:13 says, “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Our achievements are not solely our own; they are God’s work through us. 1 Corinthians 15:10 reminds us, “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect.” Recognize that it is God’s grace that enables us to succeed. Psalm 75:6-7 states, “No one from the east or the west or from the desert can exalt themselves. It is God who judges: He brings one down, He exalts another.” Our positions and successes are appointed by God.
To avoid edging God out, we must embrace humility and recognize His role in our achievements daily. Stay grounded in prayer, regularly seeking God’s guidance in your leadership. Pray for humility and the ability to see your team through God’s loving eyes. Be open to feedback and new ideas, valuing others’ perspectives. Focus on serving your team and helping them grow. Prioritize others to build strong relationships. Regularly reflect on your actions and motivations. If ego creeps in, repent and refocus on what’s truly important.
Remind yourself that true success comes from following God’s plan. Know my friend, that He has a purpose for your leadership.
By keeping our ego in check, recognizing God’s role in our success, and embracing God-driven leadership, we create a positive, uplifting environment where everyone thrives.
Let’s lead with humility, serve others, and keep our eyes on Jesus. Together, we can make a real difference in our workplaces and beyond.
