Hi Meaningful Leaders,
We’re halfway through our March exploration of unconventional change management! This week, we’re moving from theory to action. It’s time to become a ‘Change Detective,’ learning to decode resistance in real time through the powerful ‘Change Shadowing Sprint.’ Let’s get started.
Resistance is a natural part of change. But as leaders, we need to move beyond simply reacting to resistance; we need to become ‘Change Detectives,’ decoding its subtle signs in real time.
The ‘Change Shadowing Sprint’ is your training ground. Instead of relying on theoretical models, you’ll immerse yourself in real-world change initiatives, observing interactions and analyzing the communication flow.
Studies show that a large percentage of communication is non-verbal. Therefore, being able to detect body language, and tone of voice, are vital skills for a change leader.
How Does It Work?
To effectively become a ‘Change Detective’ and conduct a successful ‘Change Shadowing Sprint,’ follow these steps:
- Prepare for Shadowing:
- Identify a Relevant Initiative: Choose a current change initiative within your organization or network that offers valuable learning opportunities.
- Obtain Necessary Permissions: Ensure you have the required approvals to observe meetings and interactions.
- Set Clear Observation Goals: Define what you want to learn from the shadowing experience, such as identifying resistance patterns or analyzing communication flow.
- Conduct the Shadowing Sprint:
- Observe Interactions and Communication Flow: Pay close attention to how people interact, both verbally and non-verbally.
- Pay Attention to Verbal and Non-Verbal Cues: Look for subtle signs of resistance, such as crossed arms, averted gazes, or hesitant tones.
- Document Observations in a “Change Shadowing Log”: Record your observations in detail, noting the time, context, and specific behaviors you observe.
- Decode Resistance:
- Analyze Patterns in Behavior and Communication: Look for recurring themes or patterns in the resistance you observe.
- Identify Root Causes of Resistance: Try to understand the underlying reasons for the resistance, such as fear of the unknown or concerns about job security.
- Develop Strategies to Address Resistance: Based on your analysis, develop strategies to address the resistance and support the change initiative.
Become a ‘Change Detective,’ and you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the human dynamics of change.
Let’s Wrap It Up!
This week, we took a practical approach to change management by becoming ‘Change Detectives’ through the ‘Change Shadowing Sprint.’ Learning to decode resistance in real-time allows you to address challenges proactively and foster smoother transitions. Remember, paying attention to non-verbal cues and actively observing interactions are crucial for understanding the human dynamics of change. Take your new detective skills and apply them in your daily leadership.
I truly hope this approach gives you a new perspective in how to approach change. If so, please like, comment and share with your network; this truly helps us to reach more amazing leaders, just like you!
Thanks for reading and God bless you,
