Do You Have a Big, Scary Dream?

Hi Meaningful Leader,

I know how much work and intentionality you put into everything you do and I know how much you care about making a positive impact in your life and the lives of those around you.

Achieving success is something that like you and me, all hard-working professionals strive for, but it can be a difficult journey. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut of worrying, doubting, and struggling to make progress. But there are steps that you can take to ensure that you have a solid foundation in place to achieve success without all the stress, the uncertainty and the second-guessing.

The first step to achieving success is setting clear goals. Take some time to think about what it is you want to achieve in life. Do you want to start a business? Pursue a career change? Move up the corporate ladder? Whatever it is, make sure you have a concrete plan of action that outlines the steps you need to take to get there. Write down your goals and review them often to stay focused and motivated.

The second step is to create a plan of action. After all, how do we define the journey to follow, if the destination is unclear. Once you have your goals, create a plan of action that details how you are going to reach them. This plan should include both short-term and long-term goals and should be broken down into manageable steps to the level, if possible, of daily tasks. Don’t forget to include milestones and rewards for yourself along the way.

In this step I recommend that you do an honest skillset gap analysis. It’s important to ensure we are developing the tools we’ll need and identifying any external support we may required, in order to reach the next milestone.

The third step is to develop the right habits. Habits are essential for success, and you need to make sure that you are developing the right ones. Focus on developing healthy habits like waking up early, eating well, staying active, managing the time effectively, doing focused work each day and taking time to recharge. These habits will help you stay focused and motivated to reach your goals.

One thing I find extremely useful to keeping my focus and concentration, while completing important tasks is by using the Pomodoro technique. The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method based on 25-minute stretches of focused work broken by five-minute breaks. Longer breaks, typically 15 to 30 minutes, are taken after four consecutive work intervals. Each work interval is called a pomodoro, which in Italian means tomato. If you want to get fancy, there are Pomodoro timers available in the market, BUT your phone timer works perfectly for this.

The fourth step is to stay organized. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the tasks you need to do, so make sure that you list your important tasks and follow through on them in an organized manner, nothing kills progress easier than casual distractions. Create a system of organization that works best for you, whether it’s a to-do list, calendar, or even a bullet journal. Staying organized will ensure that you stay on track and don’t waste time on unproductive tasks or just idly scrolling on social media. Not to mention that there’s an intrinsic satisfaction in scratching off completed tasks off of a to-do list. YES please!

The fifth step is to surround yourself with the right people. The people you spend time with can have a huge impact on your success. Make sure that you are surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people who will encourage, challenge and motivate you to reach your goals. This is not limited to your direct family and closest friends. Seek a mentor, listen to podcasts our audiobooks of people you respect, and would like to emulate and learn from them.

Finally, take risks. Taking risks is an important part of achieving success. Don’t be afraid to take risks and step outside your comfort zone. Taking risks can lead to incredible rewards, so don’t be afraid to take a chance.

By following these steps, you can create a solid foundation for achieving success without having to struggle, worry, or doubt that it will happen. Take the time to create a plan of action and develop the right habits, and you’ll be on your way to achieving success and fulfillment.
